Memoirs of Childhood

Back in the Swing

school doesn't start for us for another whole week.  one week from today actually.  a friend was asking me the other day if i was ready/ excited for jack and now finn to get back to school.  i'd be lying if i didn't say yes, but truly it is a mixed yes.  i see it in them more than anything.  they're restless and ready to go.  they're too old to just be hanging around with mom all the time.  and that's a good thing.  good in that they are moving all the time towards being little men, and men don't want a mommy.  big or little.  i'm ok with it.  i like seeing them get big.

i myself am ready for the routine school brings me.  despite my creative, fun-loving "let's go! let's try it!" personality, i am pretty disciplined.  in fact, i would tell you that it's my discipline that brings the freedom to be slightly wild and crazy,  but that's another blog post :)  i remember in college dreading the weekend because there was no structure.  yes, i, meaghan, dreaded the weekend in college.  what can i say.

so before i bore you with MY back-to-school-look-how-much-i've-grown pictures of cute boys on their first days of school, we're living it up in our last week of schedule-less chaos.

some of you know that i have been a single mom most of the summer.  the boys were saying in the car the other day how fun it was that daddy was gone.  but that they also missed him.  both things make me feel good.

for whatever reason, i decided that this stint of jonlessness was going to be characterized by city park.  we used to live right around the corner, but now live a bit across town.  we've gone every evening and don't plan on stopping.  if you're there around 5/6 look for us and come say hi!

most every morning and evening after city park is spent here in the front adirondack chairs.

we tend to get filthy rather a lot.

finn is always collecting me little flowers and leaves.  such a heartbreaker that one is.

and before the summer even began, i've been promising this one a fishing trip.  i had hoped to venture off into the canyon and spend time along a river bank, but we finally squeezed it in with help from a friend keeping the two littles and another willing to loan us all the fishing gear we needed.

we didn't even get a nibble, unless you count the tugging of twigs, but jack must have said dozens of times, "this is so fun." and "mom, i love you."

i got to relive my high school/college glory days of taking my dads truck up through the maine country side, listening to classic rock and fishing in rivers.

we popped into a gas station on the way, and i told jack to pick anything he wanted.  he chose mountain dew and the skittles "share size" bag so we could "both eat them."  lock up your daughters.

he spent his casting breaks asking siri to tell him jokes.

tonight's city park night was a picnic with bread sticks from little caesers.  my boys don't like pizza.  is that normal? but they do like bread sticks and bread sticks are only $2.99.  happy dining boys.

oh.  i did not have bread sticks.  i might have had sushi.

lastly, we've hit up beaver's market every evening after the park to each pick two candies from the "candy by the pound" section.  it takes a long time to make a decision despite the poor selection.

QUIP O'THE DAY
when i was growing up my dad always called me "little girl."  i call my boys "little boy blue."  rowan has wanted me to tell him the story of little boy blue every night after he's in bed.
